The historie of the V6 engine:

Peugeot's first 6 cylinder since the 601 form the thirty's, started in 1966. whenn Peugeot and Renault started to cooperate in the development of new engines. In june 1971 Volvo joined this collaboration. This combination was called "Societe Franco-Suedoise des moteurs PRV" with each of the 3 firms an equal share. In the North of France in Douvrin they build a new factory, which started with the four cylinder of the 104 in 1972.  The V6 engine came some years later and was firsdt used for the Volvo 264, Peugeot followed with the 504 and shortly after that the 604, Renault brought his 30TS during 1975 on the market. To develop a V6 engine was an expensive job, so the cooperation was the only change to make enough to get some profit.

Technical:

Completely made from aluminium, capacity off 2664CC was very  compact and had some typical Peugeot  marks. The engine was created with the  Peugeot style, like wet cylinder housings. The engine was made under  90 degrees and  was an real V6-motor with two rods on each crankshaft tap, which made a short crankshaft possible. The valves stand in a light V  form  and where controlled by an overhead camshaft. The carburetor version had a twin carb, one was controlled by the pedal, the other one was used if necessary, like fast acceleration. It was depending on the the size of opening of the first carb and the amount of the vacuum in the inlet manifold, this construction was used for a cleaner combustion and a relative low consumption. To service this unit you needed a skilled mechanic.

In the 15CV-504 V6 the six cylinder developed 136 bhp, which was enough for a 186 km top speed.

In 1976 the four cylinder engines developed 106 bhp. After the introduction of the V6 the four cylinder was temporal withdrawn in the Coupe and cabriolet. After 3 years it was reintroduced. At the same time as the reintroduction of the four cylinder Peugeot introduced the V6 with Bosch K jetronic injection and only for the coupe, with a five speed gearbox and 144 bhp.

On all modells were safety bellts standard in 1978 and later.

After 1976 the coupe was also used for rallying with 225 bhp at 8000 rpm.
